SUMMARY:Curator Talk | Queer Spaces\, Queer Contexts
DESCRIPTION:Free | Register here >\n \nIn conjunction with Teddy Sandoval and the Butch Gardens School of Art\, this talk brings exhibition curators C. Ondine Chavoya\, John D. Murchison Regents Professor of Art in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas\, and David Evans Frantz\, Executive Director of the Claire Falkenstein Foundation into conversation with Karen Jaime\, historian and Associate Professor of Performing and Media Arts and Latina/o Studies at Cornell University. The panel will be moderated by Lee Sessions\, Permanent Collections Associate Curator at El Museo del Barrio. \nConnecting between the queer Chicane communities and cultural spaces of Los Angeles with histories of Latine life in New York\, the conversation will explore how bars\, clubs\, streets\, homes\, and artistic networks become spaces for gathering and exchange. Together\, the panelists will ask: What happens when queer people make space for one another\, and what kinds of art\, politics\, relationships\, and communities become possible? \nThe galleries will remain open for extended evening hours\, giving visitors time to experience the exhibition before and after the conversation.A reception will follow the talk. \nCo-presented by El Museo del Barrio and Independent Curators International. \nImage caption: Teddy Sandoval\, Las Locas\, c. 1980. SUMMARY:Noches de Cine: Un Poeta
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Noches de Cine\, El Museo’s new film series celebrating the latest voices in Latine cinema. Through acclaimed films from Latin America\, the Caribbean\, and the diaspora\, the series invites audiences to discover compelling stories that spark dialogue\, reflection\, and cultural exchange. Stay after the screening for conversation and community. \nCurated by Sebastián Rea. \n\nUn Poeta \nDirected by Simón Mesa Soto (2025) \nÓscar was once a celebrated poet. Now he drinks too much\, works as a substitute teacher to pay the rent\, and mostly avoids his own reflection. Everything changes when he meets Yurlady\, a teenager from a working-class neighborhood in Medellín whose extraordinary talent reignites his ambitions. \nRather than offering a conventional mentorship story\, Un Poeta explores the complicated dynamics of generosity\, ambition\, and ego. With dark humor and a sharp\, deadpan tone\, director Simón Mesa Soto delivers a compelling character study that won the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. \nFree.
