SUMMARY:Gallery Conversations PERSPECTIVAS: Power\, Memory\, and the Politics of Looking
DESCRIPTION:Registration here > \n\nUnwind after work and spend your Thursday evenings in February at El Museo del Barrio! Join us for intimate gallery conversations featuring artists and thinkers sharing their personal perspectives on the art on view in Coco Fusco: Tomorrow\, I Will Become an Island\, and Jangueando: Recent Acquisitions\, 2021–2025. These informal talks invite you to slow down\, look closely\, and connect more deeply with the artwork in an informal setting. \nOn February 5\, the series opens with Marco Saavedra—restaurateur\, artist\, and immigrant rights activist—reflecting on Coco Fusco’s photographic suite Everyone Who Lives Here is a New Yorker\, a project dedicated to immigrant narratives\, and in which Saavedra is featured. \nPlease note: El Museo will stay open late every Thursday in February\, until 8:00 PM. Come early\, enjoy the exhibitions at your own pace\, and then join us for the gallery conversation from 6:30–7:30 PM. This program is designed as an interactive\, guided experience in the galleries and has limited capacity. Standing room only; advance registration is recommended. Please register here > \n \nMarco Saavedra serves as host at La Morada Mutual Aid Restaurant. Originally from La Mixteca Baja his family reconnected through the southern border in 1993. After infiltrating two detention centers\, Saavedra received political asylum in 2021 after a decade in removal proceedings\, setting a precedent for activists like himself. His work with the National Immigrant Youth Alliance is featured in the Sundance award winning documentary\, “The Infiltrators” (2019). Saavedra is co-writer of “Shadows then Light” (2012)\, “The Long Defeat” (2014)\, and “Eclipse of Dreams” (2017) and illustrated Chef Natalia Mendez’s cookbook trilogy “Las Hermanas de La Milpa” and “New Narratives on the Peopling of America” (2024). His plein air paintings have shown at Bronx Art Space\, Bronx River Art Center\, Sky High Farm Biennial\, and The Bronx Museum. \n
