SUMMARY:Erika Harrsch: Performance and Book Presentation
DESCRIPTION:El Museo del Barrio together with the Mexican Cultural Institute\, the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMERCED)\, the Consulate General of Mexico in New York\, and Gary Goldring present Mexican artist Erika Harrsch in collaboration with the internationally acclaimed Mexican singer Magos Herrera for a performance of “The Dream Act\,” an imaginative perspective on the loaded reality of the immigration conundrum. \nFollowing the performance Erika Harrsh will be in conversation with Richard Vine\, art-critic and Managing Editor of Art in America\, and Independent curator Elvis Fuentes to discuss Harrsch’s oeuvre\, influences\, and works spanning a decade of collaborative artistic production in New York. \nA book signing with Erika Harrsch and cocktails will follow the program. \nTo RSVP\, click here. \nErika Harrsch was born in Mexico City and has lived and worked in Mexico\, Italy\, Germany and\, since 2001\, in New York. Her multidisciplinary art practice employs resources that include drawing\, painting\, photography\, video\, animation and installations as a scenario building based on elements in both artificial and natural environments. Presenting intimate aspects of the human condition\, inviting and seducing the viewer to evidence their direct contact with reality through the sense perception. For more than six years Harrsch has done research with an entomologist\, immersing into the world of Lepidoptera. Has used butterflies in her work as a metaphor to address matters of identity\, gender\, nationality\, migration and the relationship of human beings upon their own nature and fragility. These visual metaphors could be perceived through a plurality of perspectives\, crossing and blurring boundaries to achieve a poetic image. \nMagos Herrera was born in Mexico City and is currently based out of New York City. A dazzling jazz singer-songwriter\, producer\, and educator with a 20-year career\, Magos is regarded as one of the most expressive\, beautiful voices and most active vocalists in the contemporary Latin American jazz scene. She is best known for her eloquent vocal improvisation and her singular bold style\, which embraces elements of contemporary jazz with Latin American melodies and rhythms singing in Spanish\, English\, and Portuguese\, in a style that elegantly blends and surpasses language boundaries. \nElvis Fuentes is Ph.D. Candidate in Art History at Rutgers University and independent curator based in New York. Graduated from the University of Havana\, he served as curator at the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba\, Havana\, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture\, San Juan\, and El Museo del Barrio\, New York. Fuentes is a fellow of the Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council (2015-2016). \nRichard Vine is the managing editor of Art in America. He has taught at such institutions as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, the American Conservatory of Music\, and New York University\, and has served as editor-in- chief of theChicago Review and Dialogue: An Art Journal. His articles on art\, literature\, and intellectual history have appeared in numerous journals and Books. \nBoth the cultural branch of the Consulate General of Mexico in New York and a US not-for-profit organization\, The Mexican Cultural Institute of New York is committed to generating awareness of the richness\, dynamism and cultural diversity of Mexico as a plural and creative nation.  \nThis program is generously supported by Gary Goldring
