Every weekend\, we’re highlighting the storytelling\, food\, music\, and dance from a different country of Central and South America at Astor Court. For tickets and information\, click here. \nOn Saturday\, August 11th and Sunday\, August 12th\, ‘Passport to the World’ will feature COLOMBIA. Stop by and learn about Colombia’s stories\, music\, and breath taking landscapes through art making\, a special cumbia dance workshop for all ages\, and discover the bullerengue as performed by New York’s own Bulla en Barrio! \nSCHEDULE: \nStorytelling\nWaiting for Biblioburro  | 11:00am – 12:00pm\nStorytelling is an important aspect of Latin American and Caribbean culture. It is a way that we can communicate shared experiences\, values\, and learn about something new. Join us each week as we share stories from around the world that talk about different cultures\, family\, home\, magic\, and more!Join us in reading Waiting for the Biblioburro by Monica Brown\, a book inspired by the heroic efforts of a real-life librarian who journeys over the mountains of Colombia to bring literacy and culture to children. During this program we will discuss the story and relate it to our own experiences. \nArt Making\nBatalla de las Flores (Battle of the Flowers) | 11:00am – 3:30pm\nBatalla de las Flores (Battle of the Flowers) is the first day of Carnival in Colombia. The Battle of Flowers is a great parade of floats\, headed by the Carnival queen and followed by folkloric groups\, disguises\, cumbia groups and\, winners of the last carnival’s competitions. The floats for the parade are made entirely out of flowers! Today we will create our own flowers and add them to our own float design. \nMovement Workshop\nCumbia Dance with Carlos Osorio | 1:00pm – 2:00pm\nStart your dance journey with one of the most festive dances of Colombia\, cumbia! Learn the basics of this dance and its history as we move to this South America! \nPerformance\nBulla en el Barrio  | 3:00pm – 4:00pm\nLearn about the Bullerengue tradition that comes from the Urabá and Caribbean regions of Colombia in this unique performance by Bulla en el Barrio! \nABOUT BULLA EN EL BARRIO\nBulla en el Barrio is an effort to open a space in New York City that deeply explores the Bullerengue tradition born in Colombia in the Urabá and Caribbean regions of the country. Bullerengue belongs to a genre known as Bailes Cantaos or “Sung Dances”\, which are traditional Afro-Colombian musical expressions. It is distinguished by powerful rhythmic drums\, clapping\, haunting storytelling vocals and melodies that celebrate nature\, agriculture and the life and death of people in the community. Bullerengue has been a pillar for cultural expression and a tool for resistance in many of the most humble regions affected by the Colombian armed conflict. This is why Bulla en el Barrio also aims to unite communities and encourage them to generate a spontaneous celebration of life through music\, dance and the stories these songs tell.
