DESCRIPTION:El Museo del Barrio is going to the Bronx Zoo! In partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society join us at the Bronx Zoo for their six-week long summer program Passport to the World. Every weekend\, we’re highlighting the storytelling\, food\, music\, and dance from a different country of Central and South America at Astor Court. For tickets and information\, click here. \nOn Saturday\, August 4th and Sunday\, August 5th\, ‘Passport to the World’ will feature PERU. Stop by and learn about the richness of Peru through storytelling and movement workshops then stick around for a final performance by the Abya Yala Arte y Cultura ensemble! \nSCHEDULE: \nStorytelling\nThe Fox\, the Mole and the Moon | 11:00am – 12:00pm\nFrom the Andean oral traditions\, come hear the story about an image many of us see on the face of a full moon. This story telling will come to life through movement and colores! \nArt Making\nIncan Foil Sun | 11:00am – 3:30pm\nInti is the Incan Sun God. Inti is represented as a golden disk with rays and a human face. The Inca dedicated many ceremonies to the Sun in order to ensure their welfare. During the struggle for independence\, the first flag that represented Peru was navy blue\, and contained a golden sun representing Inti showing a connection to their Incan roots. Today we will make foil Inti’s. \nMovement\nAbya Yala Arte y Cultura| 1:00pm – 2:00pm\nMove in with different generations through dance exercises that lead up to an understanding of the basic steps of traditional Peruvian dance. Combining many different techniques in this interactive workshop that is healthy and fun! \nPerformance\nAbya Yala Arte y Cultura | 3:00pm – 4:00pm\nBring your knowledge of Peru to the main stage for this final presentation of Peruvian culture brought to you by Abya Yala Arte y Culutra. This performance brings together all the vibrancy and richness of Peru in New York to you and yours. \nABOUT ABYA YALA\nSince 2002\, Abya Yala Arte y Cultura\, a New York-based 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural organization\, has presented diverse art projects that maintain Andean cultural expressions and promote cultural awareness. Our programs are community grounded\, inter-generational and inclusive. Each year\, Abya Yala presents and produces a season of events that include: educational and artistic workshops\, art exhibitions\, community forums\, theatrical representations\, and culinary and art festivals. Our programs are multidisciplinary and led by professional artists. Special emphasis is always placed on the quality of the artistic expressions and the historical and cultural accuracy of the information presented. An important objective is to increase appreciation and knowledge of traditional Andean art and culture through a deep exploration of authentic millenary traditions\, while embracing contemporary artists and their aspirations to grow and re-interpret their cultural knowledge. Our programs involve working collaboratively with other organizations and the community at large\, establishing artistic partnerships and convening artists of all genres to nurture shared values and address issues of diversity through the arts.
