DESCRIPTION:CALLING ALL ARTISTS! El Museo del Barrio’s Curatorial team is inviting artists of Puerto Rican\, Latine\, Latin American\, or Caribbean descent to register for a twenty-minute portfolio review. OVER THE TABLE\, a part of the Office Hours project\, offers art practitioners in different stages of their development the opportunity to engage in one-on-one discussions about their work or an upcoming project with one curator. These informal exchanges seek to turn the traditional artist-curator portfolio review into an act of camaraderie between individuals working in the same field. \nThis portfolio review features the outstanding Curator\, Activist\, Jasmine Wahi\, the Founder and Co-Director of Project For Empty Space. \nGUIDELINES\n– Open to artists of Puerto Rican\, Latine\, Latin American\, or Caribbean descent living in the greater NYC metropolitan area.\n– Bring images of your work (in whatever format you choose) and the equipment that you will need to present it properly. Free Wi-Fi is available in El Museo’s Café. Please do not bring any actual works of art to El Museo; this is against the Museum’s insurance policy.\n– You must be at El Café five minutes before the time allocated for your meeting and expect to be at El Museo for up to an hour. Her practice predominantly focuses on issues of female empowerment\, complicating binary structures within social discourses\, and exploring multipositional cultural identities through the lens of intersectional feminism. Ms. Wahi received her undergraduate degree in Art History from New York University\, and attended the Institute of Fine Art. She began her art world endeavors in the South Asian art department at Christie’s Auction House\, which was followed by positions in several Contemporary Asian/South Asian art galleries around New York City. In 2008\, she began working on curatorial projects working with emerging and mid-career artists from across the globe. \nIn 2010\, Ms. Wahi Co-Founded Project For Empty Space\, a not-for-profit nomadic organization that creates multidisciplinary art exhibitions and programming that encourage social dialogue\, education\, and systemic change through the support of both artists and communities. In 2013\, Ms. Wahi began a long-term partnership in Newark\, NJ\, with Rebecca Jampol of Solo(s) Project House\, to create a series of pop-up exhibitions under the moniker ‘Gateway Project Spaces.’ In 2015\, Ms. Wahi and Ms. Jampol revamped their space into a mixed use space that housed both Project For Empty Space and a plethora of commercial artist studios. This ‘third space’ endeavor has since become a community for multi-disciplinary artists and a space for social discourse\, activism\, and change. \nIn addition to her other work\, Ms. Wahi is also on faculty at the School of Visual Arts: MFA Fine Arts\, where she focuses on Intersectional Feminism and Art Praxis. She is a former board member of the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) and instructor for the Girls Educational Mentoring Services (GEMS) group. She has also co-organized numerous interventions and happenings as part of her social activist work. Ms. Wahi’s curatorial work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal\, Vogue\, Vogue India\, Hyperallergic\, Whitewall Magazine\, ArtNet\, and ArtNews to name a few. \nABOUT OFFICE HOURS (OH)\nOH is comprised of a series of actions spread throughout El Museo del Barrio’s facilities for which multi-disciplinary artist Nicolas Dumit Estévez invites the various departments of El Museo to operate at a horizontal level with its own exhibition space. OH conceives El Museo and the museum as a holistic work of art; that is\, a living artwork existing beyond the boundaries of the exhibition space and co-mingling with life.
