SUMMARY:Portraying Our Communities: Latinx Photography Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the current exhibition En Foco: The New York Puerto Rican Experience\, 1973-1974\, join El Museo del Barrio in conversation with contemporary photographers Sebastian Hidalgo and Star Montana. Working in their hometowns of Pilsen\, Chicago\, and East Los Angeles respectively\, the two photographers represent new generations of Latinx photographers whose practices reflect a shared\, community-driven ethos with the Bronx-based collective. Moderated by El Museo’s Curator Susanna V. Temkin\, the discussion will center on Hidalgo and Montana’s current projects\, and will consider the significance as well as on-going challenges of centering Latinx narratives within contemporary photography. \nThe conversation will be preceded by an introduction and virtual walk-through of the exhibition by El Museo’s Chief Curator\, Rodrigo Moura. \nFREE via Zoom Live | To RSVP\, click here. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nSebastian Hidalgo is an independent visual journalist\, writer\, and National Geographic Explorer. His work focuses on immigration\, low-wage labor\, and environmental justice. The first few years of his career were spent in Chicago’s predominantly working-class Mexican neighborhood\, Pilsen––where he was raised\, freelanced\, and influenced by civic and investigative peers. His photography is among the permanent collection at The National Museum of Mexican Fine Art and at Harvard University. \nStar Montana is a photo-based artist who lives and works in Los Angeles\, CA. She was born and raised in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles\, which is predominantly Mexican American and serves as the backdrop to much of her work. Her work has recently been exhibited at Charlie James Gallery (2019\, 2016); Residency Art Gallery (2018); LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes (2018); Occidental College (2017); The Mexican Center for Culture and Cinematic Arts at the Mexican Consulate General of Mexico (2017); The Main Museum (2017); Ballroom Marfa (2017); and Vincent Price Art Museum (2016). Montana will be an artist-in-residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in 2020. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Art from the University of Southern California\, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of Visual Arts\, and an Associate of Arts in Photography from East Los Angeles College. \nThis program is made possible by the generous support of TD Bank.
