Inspired by the exhibition Octopus & Others: Acts of Collaboration & Poetics, ART-BOOK-MAKE invites visitors of all ages to celebrate books as works of art. Spend the day exploring artist books, meeting artists and storytellers, discovering new books, and making your own creations.
ART
Encounter a newly built recreation of Octopus: An Act of Sculpture, the monumental accordion-style plywood book first unfurled in El Museo’s courtyard in 1982. Unlike the original, which is now preserved in El Museo del Barrio’s Permanent Collection, this recreation is meant to be touched. Write, draw, and leave your mark as part of this collaborative artwork.
BOOK
Browse a lively book fair featuring children’s books in Spanish and English from Word Up Community Bookshop. Enjoy read-alouds throughout the day, featuring new favorites and timeless classics in Spanish and English.
MAKE
The museum’s ground floor transforms into a hands-on art studio where children and their grown-ups can discover how artist books are made. Experiment with hinges, pop-ups, pockets, transforming pages, and other interactive elements before creating an artist book of your own artist book to take home.
