La Llorona
Directed by Jayro Bustamante (2019)
La Llorona reimagines one of Latin America’s most enduring legends as a powerful reckoning with Guatemala’s genocide. A retired general, acquitted of crimes against the Maya Ixil people, finds himself haunted by the women whose families he destroyed.
Blending psychological horror with historical memory, director Jayro Bustamante uses the supernatural to confront a nation’s unresolved past. The film premiered to critical acclaim, earning the Best Film award in the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival.
